Opportunity for High School Pengyous: American and Chinese Future Leaders Summer Program, Apply by May 16th


2016-china-summer-youth-sliderThe Global Leadership Institute at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS) is seeking Chinese and American high school students to participate in a summer leadership program from July 16-30! Apply before May 16th to be eligible.

This summer program includes game-based role-playing focused on four global challenges that concern the U.S. and China. Through guided readings, discussion and team negotiations you will produce an action plan that emphasizes common-ground partnerships. Build problem-solving and decision-making skills, critical thinking conflict resolution techniques while making pengyous and having fun!

Program and Curriculum

Tackle four critical issues of global importance. During the interactive game play you will learn about the latest scientific research and discoveries that have promoted innovation and influenced global policy decisions in one of the four focus areas: climate change, clean energy, artificial intelligence and infectious disease.

Part of the programming includes site visits to scientific institutes including:

  • Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the oldest and largest ocean and Earth science research center
  • Salk Institute for Biological Studies, a top research institute in biological sciences
  • Jacobs School of Engineering, largest and strongest engineering school in the entire UC system
  • Qualcomm Institute, one of the four technology institutes in the UC system to devote to multidisciplinary research and technological innovation
  • San Diego Supercomputer Center, one of the nation’s first supercomputer centers and a leader in data-intensive computing and cyber infrastructure

Fun Adventures

Participate and attend social activities and special events that will make your experience unforgettable, including team-building adventures offered by UC San Diego Challenge Course, a visit to Birch Aquarium, beach party and barbecue and trips to UCLA, Hollywood and Old Town San Diego.

Cost and Logistics

  • $3,500 includes room, board and program costs
  • Students from out of town are responsible for transportation to and from San Diego
  • Students will be met and transported from a San Diego destination to the residence hall
  • One to two teachers from China will be selected to be with the students all the time
  • Senior high school or college student interns will provide additional help to all students
  • All students will stay in UC San Diego residence halls
