Event Details

Come celebrate the 40th anniversary of “reform and opening” by having dinner alongside Julian Gewirtz as he gives insight on his book: Unlikely Partners: Chinese Reformers, Western Economists, and the Making of Global China (Harvard University Press, 2017).

Join Young China Watchers in New York, NY in marking the 40th anniversary of “reform and opening,” with Julian Gewirtz.

We’ll sit down to dinner with Julian to hear insights from and discuss his book, Unlikely Partners: Chinese Reformers, Western Economists, and the Making of Global China (Harvard University Press, 2017). The book examines how Chinese officials and intellectuals looked beyond their country’s borders for economic guidance after Mao Zedong’s death in 1976 and during the transformational decade of the 1980s.

Julian Gewirtz is an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, Harvard University. He received his doctorate in history at the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He is the author of Unlikely Partners: Chinese Reformers, Western Economists, and the Making of Global China (Harvard University Press, 2017).
