Amherst China Initiative (ACI) is a cultural immersion program that emphasizes teaching and learning. The core focus of this program is to offer American and Chinese students the opportunity to challenge each other academically, to broaden their perspectives, and to build a cross-cultural community.

ACI offers US college students an international volunteer experience teaching in China to students of all levels (graduate, undergrad, secondary, and primary); ACI fellows will instruct free, open and self-designed English courses to the public at China’s nationally ranked 3rd university, Zhejiang University, in Hangzhou.

When not busy with teaching or preparing for classes, ACI fellows will undergo intensive language study on weekdays and backpack through China on the weekends. The program is based in Hangzhou, China, and has brought over 50 Amherst students to China over the past 3 summers to outreach to hundreds of Chinese students who believe that English and a Western-style educational experience can improve their future.

ACI differentiates itself from most study abroad programs with its emphasis on independence and immersion. ACI Fellows are responsible for their own classes; interact with their Chinese teachers, tutors and students; and work with the Amherst alumni who are running and funding the program. Our vision is to build a program where Alumni, students, and faculty can collaborate and develop China-related initiatives so that we can maximize opportunities for ACI Fellows to become leaders in an increasingly globalized world.
