The Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan was founded in 1961 and has been a national leader in Chinese studies for nearly 50 years. A member of the International Institute, the center provides students, specialists, and the public with expert resources and a deeper understanding of contemporary and historical issues related to China. University of Michigan also has an alliance institute called University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiaotong University Joint Institute.

The center is the premier place on the University of Michigan campus to gain access to resources on China, including leading scholars, ongoing projects, and funding for faculty and student research. It houses experts in nearly every major facet of Chinese studies ranging from literature and history to law and public health. This wide disciplinary range enables the center to offer a unique interdisciplinary master's degree, which provides specialist training in Chinese studies. The Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) awards a number of fellowships and grants to U-M graduate and undergraduate students in Chinese studies in order to study abroad.
