Embracing both tradition and modernity, Shanghai is a dynamic and exciting city. Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, it is one of the largest port cities in Asia. A thriving commercial city, Shanghai offers plenty for people, Chinese and Westerners alike, to enjoy.
ECNU is a key institution of higher education under the direct auspices of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It has 10 schools with 31 departments offering a wide range of programs. The Department of International Chinese Studies that hosts the program is among the top departments in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language in China. ECNU's beautiful campus is located in the western part of the city, within walking distance to public transportation means. Stores and restaurants are in close vicinity to both the front and back gates.
During the program, we will have at least one language practicum activity per week. The instructors will accompany UVA students to conduct different tasks outside of the classroom. These activities will enhance students' mastery of what they gain from the classroom and to explore as much as possible different phases of Chinese society.
While we encourage ECNU instructors and students to eat together after the 11:00 am class every day, Thursday's language table is mandatory.
Students are required to sign a Chinese language pledge the day before the classes start. The pledge is crucial for your success in making the most progress while immersed in the Chinese environment.
We will invite 4-5 guest speakers to give talks weekdays throughout the eight week session.
Participants will live in an international student residence hall or a guest house at ECNU. These facilities are typical college residential buildings and the rooms include: bed (with bed sheets), desk, chair, lamp, closet, TV, phone, and air conditioning.
The program cost is based on double occupancy room rate. However, single room occupancy is available upon request and additional cost per day will be charged upon arrival at ECNU. Also, if students choose to have an ECNU student language partner share their room, they will need to pay an additional cost per day room differential upon arrival. Request for single room or language partner occupancy must be indicated in the application form.
