Huangnan Nationalities Middle School is currently seeking an adventurous teacher/assistant program manager for a rigorous and rewarding teaching fellowship at an English training program for high school students on the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau.

Overview

Job Description

Start Date

The teacher will receive a month-long training in Asia in August 2015. The fellow should then expect to travel to the post in late August and begin work in early September.

Location

The post offers both an amazing location – a valley town high on the plateau, surrounded by mountains and rolling grasslands – and bright, engaged students, who are chosen specifically for the program from largely underserved farming and nomadic herding communities. The position is located in a mid-size town two and a half hours hours from Xining, Qinghai’s provincial capital.

Scope of Work

The teacher is tasked with continuing to develop an English-language curriculum for our students and delivering roughly 15 hours of classroom instruction per week to three classes of bright, inquisitive high school students. The teacher should also be prepared to offer 7-10 hours of open office hours each week. The program has a lot of flexibility for an energetic teacher; in the past, teachers at the post started a photography project, staged musicals, coached a girls’ basketball team, developed a professional English program for advanced students, and helped students develop their own service projects. The ideal applicant for this post is someone with post-college work experience, and preferably some experience structuring an ESL curriculum or a background in ESL teaching who is looking to strengthen his/her skill-set in an extremely rewarding environment. The teacher/assistant program manager works with a program manager who manages the budget, school relationships, teaching responsibilities, and grant reporting, as well as a local program assistant and librarian. The teacher should expect to work about 40 hours per week in a fun environment, leaving ample time for language study, hiking, or a variety of other cultural activities.
