Job Description

The International Student Advisor provides specialized support to international students, exchange visitors, and scholars including but not limited to immigration, cultural adjustment and related concerns. The advisor assists with ensuring compliance with federal immigration regulations for this campus population. The advisor solves a variety of complex immigration issues requiring a considerable knowledge of immigration rules and regulations.

Specific duties can include:
Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), maintaining the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and all related certification requirements.

Organizes SEVIS data processing under the guidelines provided by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and maintains data and quality control management.

Provides accurate immigration information to international students, monitors and tracks student immigration status, and maintains appropriate files.

Advises students with immigration petitions and applications to include processing for new F-1 visas, work permits, reinstatement, and extensions of stay, reduced course load authorizations, change of status, medical leave and economic hardship employment authorization.

Provides active case management to an assigned caseload of students. Supports international students experiencing cross-cultural, family, personal or economic crisis, which may impact academic performance. Helps students to access appropriate community services/resources.

Supports international student programming potentially including advising international student groups and university stakeholder training as appropriate. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree
Minimum of one year of professional experience. Must be authorized to work in the United States. 
Ability to read and interpret complex immigration regulations and to apply them correctly.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree
DSO/RO experience: providing F-1 and J-1 immigration advising
Experience with SEVIS
Experience living or studying abroad
Speaking a second language — Arabic and Mandarin are high priorities
An understanding of U.S. higher education systems and the ability to interact with a diverse population.
