American Councils improves education at home and abroad through the support of international research, the design of innovative programs, and the exchange of students, scholars, and professionals around the world. American Councils employs a full-time professional staff of over 370, located in the U.S. and in 40 cities in 24 countries of Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Asia and the Middle East.

Position Summary :

Based in Washington, DC, the Program Associate will primarily assist in the administration and daily clerical tasks of the Chinese Overseas Flagship Program, which is designed to train superior speakers of Chinese through a specially designed curriculum. Other responsibilities include assisting with a variety of program logistics and clerical tasks, and responding to inquiries. The Program Associate will work closely with a dedicated team of Flagship staff members and reports to the Program Manager for the Chinese Flagship Program. While organizational skills and attention to detail will be an important plus for any candidate, experience and interest in study abroad and international education is also important. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to expand into a Program Officer position and to develop areas of expertise in international education. Some travel may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the daily operations of the Chinese Overseas Flagship program, specifically in responding to program-related inquiries, meticulous tracking of documents, processing check or wire requests, other clerical tasks as assigned
  • Update and monitor program applications and materials
  • Update participant handbook and construct program-related publications (newsletters, websites)
  • Assist in the organization, coordination, and presentation of selection meetings and pre-departure orientations (including scheduling and logistics)
  • Coordinate participant testing and measure for tracking progress of participants
  • Communicate with overseas staff, US university partners, and government contractors and funders
  • Provide ongoing logistical support to coordinators, directors and students overseas
  • Facilitate the processing of visas, travel, housing, and internships for participants and staff
  • Assist with writing reports, proposals, and promotional materials
  • Data compilation for grant proposals and reports
  • Conduct outreach activities, including occasionally giving presentations;
  • Assist in maintaining and updating participant database

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in international relations or related field. Graduate degree strongly preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to perform routine office support tasks
  • Experience in student advisement, international education, study abroad, or federally funded programs for cultural exchange
  • Strong ability to work on multiple tasks and as part of a team
  • Detailed-oriented, outstanding organizational and time-management skills
  • Strong spoken and written English
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with a particular ability to work in an open, fast-paced and group-office environment
  • Knowledge of Chinese highly desired
  • Website or newsletter design experience preferred
