China Unheard: Humans of New York-Style Project Giving Voice to Rural China

This man from Tengchong, Yunnan tells China Unheard that although his land was confiscated by the government to build a school and he never received compensation for it, he doesn’t mind because he thinks its important that the local children, especially his grandchildren, receive an education.

There’s a new social media project on the block that is trying to collect and share rural China’s stories through crowdsourcing! China Unheard, launched by a team of passionate volunteers, including several Teach for China fellows, are a group of people who are dedicated and passionate about showing the world China’s raw humanity and inspirational individuals.

Like the photograph and story above, the China Unheard team takes the time to get to know people in China and share their  “Humans of New York”-style stories, giving voice to a group of individuals who otherwise may be unheard and misunderstood. The China Unheard team’s mission perfectly sums up their motivations:

We believe that in a world filled with a diversity of cultures, customs, and wealth, judgments and stereotypes form. These barriers further divide humankind…China Unheard (CU) is a social media project that seeks to humanize on the ‘foreignness’ that is perceived between people from different cultures and encourage understanding of the world from different lenses.

On behalf of all Pengyoumen, thank you China Unheard, for your great work sharing the untold stories of China! Follow this link if you’d like to get involved and share your own China experiences!
