Confucius and the World He Created

with Michael Schuman

Tuesday, February 2, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, New York City

Confucius and his teachings were vilified in twentieth century China by reformers and revolutionaries who believed the philosophy to be a feudal relic holding China back from a strong, modern future. In addition to reviewing the history of Confucianism, Michael Schuman describes in his new book, Confucius and the World He Created, how China’s leadership has recently promoted Confucian ideals in an attempt to resurrect traditional Chinese culture as a bulwark against foreign influence. The result has been a Confucian revival throughout China. Join Michael Schuman as he discusses his book, and the long-term effects of the Confucian revival, with the National Committee on February 2, in New York City.
