It’s probably no exaggeration to say that Chen Kaige’s film kicked off a revolution in Chinese cinema, breaking from the previous tradition of stodgy propaganda films produced by Communist China up to that point. The film’s story of a Communist soldier whose uneasy meeting with a family of countryside peasants changes a rural girl’s idea of her possible place in society has an ambiguity and thoughtful portrayal of humanity that was previously unseen in modern Chinese film, aided by truly beautiful cinematography.
