Shanghai International Film Festival returns with stars, special screenings and more.

Founded in 1993, the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) is China’s only A-category film festival accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Association, meaning that while Beijing launched its own festival in 2011, Shanghai’s is more legit. Each year the festival draws an assortment of A-list celebrities, with Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant and Jackie Chan on the red carpet last year, while nearly 900 films were shown at 35 cinemas across the city. The challenge for organisers, as ever, is to appeal to foreign studios and global audiences while abiding by the constraints the government places on film.
