"The Moral Narrative of the Communist Party: It's Secret Source of Power" | Foreign Correspondents' Club of China

Event Details

This talk by Professor Kerry Brown is based on her new book due out in September 2018, China’s Dreams: The Culture of the Communist Party and its Secret Sources of Power (Polity).

Most people locate the Communist Party’s power in the use of hard levers–organisation, information control, control of finance and policy levers. What is less attended to, argues our speaker, is its desire to control narratives–and in particular the ways in which under Xi Jinping these narratives have grown so powerful and important in mobilising Chinese people’s emotions in a way that traditional ideology fails to.
