The Position

The American Co-Director of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, resident in Nanjing, China, is the senior SAIS- JHU representative on the ground day-to-day and reports to the Director of SAIS China, while working closely with the Dean of SAIS, the Sr. Associate Dean for Operations and Finance and the Director of the SAIS HNC Washington Office. The Center is a 50-50 jointly-administered program with Nanjing University and this close relationship requires considerable consultation and coordination with Chinese colleagues. The American Co-Director runs the Center in close collaboration with the Chinese Co-Director, appointed by Nanjing University, as well as with other administrators and faculty of Nanjing University. He/she directly supervises four American staff members and co-supervises more than 40 Chinese staff members who are jointly appointed by the two universities. A key task is providing academic, pedagogic and programmatic leadership to the educational mission of the Center, acting as academic head for international (non-Chinese) faculty and supervising the daily administration of the Center. In addition, the Co-Director will work with the SAIS China Director to further enhance the Center’s status as the premier place for professional and policy study pertinent to U.S.-China relations and international affairs. Over time this will involve developing, adapting, and implementing new, innovative programs and capabilities in close consultation with our Chinese partners and the SAIS leadership.

Since all HNC students and international faculty and staff live in Center facilities during the academic year, he/she also has significant duties regarding housing and facilities management. The American Co-Director also liaises with other institutions within and outside Johns Hopkins that may want to utilize the Center in various ways. He/she will also pursue the development of appropriate research activities and conferences for the Center, and promote internships and other professionally oriented experiences for students. The American Co-Director will also work closely with the SAIS-Asia Development Director concerning fundraising. This includes working to build and maintain the Hopkins-Nanjing Council and interfacing with alumni of the Center in varying capacities. The American Co-Director works closely with the Director of the SAIS HNC Washington Office on recruitment of faculty and students and all financial/budgetary issues and in conjunction with the Joint Academic Committee comprising selected SAIS faculty and the SAIS Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. If the American Co-Director has credentials and academic knowledge in a field germane to the Center’s teaching mission, he/she may have the opportunity to teach at the Center.

Qualifications

A PhD in a social science or humanities discipline, with a background in China studies, is strongly preferred; highly qualified candidates with JD degrees or master’s degrees and relevant equivalent academic or professional experience will also be considered. Fluency in Mandarin Chinese, speaking and reading, is required for this job. Previous experience in university teaching and administration/finance/fundraising, living in China, and working with Chinese partners on joint ventures is highly desirable.
