The Math Teacher at SYA-China is a full time position. The Math teacher reports directly to the Resident Director (RD). S/he is responsible for teaching four or, if the need arises, five sections of math to bright, motivated 11th and 12th grade students from top US public and independent schools.

The Math Teacher at SYA-China is a full time position. The Math Teacher reports directly to the Resident Director (RD). S/he is responsible for teaching four or, if the need arises, five sections of math to bright, motivated 11th and 12th grade students from top US public and independent schools. Because SYA has students for only one year, the Math Teacher is responsible for preparing students to return to their sending schools and continue with their math sequences (see below). In addition to teaching related responsibilities, the Math Teacher shares, with other faculty members, other academic and non-academic duties as elaborated below.
Specific areas of responsibility and job expectations include:
A. Report directly to the Resident Director (RD).
B. Adhere to SYA curriculum guides.
C. Teach four or five (if enrollment warrants) sections of math:
- Math sections are offered as follows:
- Algebra II (
- (leading to PreCalculus or Advanced PreCalculus atsending schools).
- PreCalculus (Leading to AB Calculus at sending schools).
- Advanced PreCalculus (Leading to BC Calculus at sending schools).
- Advanced Placement AB Calculus (preparing students to sit for the AP examination in May).
- If enrollment warrants, a BC Calculus course will be offered.
- The Math Teacher is responsible for determining appropriate class placement for all students based on previous instructor recommendations and other appropriate diagnostic methods.
- Assessment of student performance should be frequent.
- Letter grades and qualitative assessments of student progress are required at the end of each quarterly marking period.
D. Communicate with parents and home schools via email and telephone to discuss
student concerns as needed.
E. Fulfill other required duties such as attending all scheduled meetings and supervising
school-sponsored activities as needed at the request of the RD.
F. Chaperone school trips as needed at the request of the RD.
G. Serve on a disciplinary committee when student discipline issues arise as needed at the request of the RD.
H. Be available to serve as “on duty” faculty member during school vacations as needed at the request of the RD.
