The Associate Director will collaborate with the Faculty Directors of the Cornell Institute for China Economic Research (CICER) to develop and implement a strategy for significant expansion of the program’s core initiative. This person will oversee the day-to-day coordination, administration and operation of the institute, collaborating with the Directors to develop operating procedures and practices for CICER.

 

Demonstrating initiative, independent decision making and a high level of professionalism and confidentiality, provide overall executive-level, management, direction, leadership, and comprehensive administrative support for the Cornell Institute for China Economic Research in collaboration with the faculty directors, and leadership in Einaudi, JCB, and CAS in building and promoting CICER.

 

· Under the leadership of the Directors, collaborate on strategic planning, forging links with industry/corporations, to leverage CICER research. This position will serve as the primary liaison between the institute and the affiliates. The position is instrumental in building and maintaining the corporate and government relationships.

 

· Continue to assist in the development and enhancement of the summer camp program for college students to attract top students to come to Cornell for graduate school. Assist the Directors in developing short-term training programs for college students, government officials, and corporate executives. Further develop relationship/partnerships with industries through a membership/associate program where corporations/government agencies provide some support in exchange for our research outputs and participation of our events. All of these programs will contribute to CICER ability to be a self-sustaining unit.

 

· Manage and execute the preparation of grant and contract proposals and ensure related compliance. Oversee grant and special project budgets, fund sources and project codes using Cornell’s accounting reports.

 

· Oversee and assist with the organization of events at CICER such as, seminars, workshops, and conferences.

 

· Manage the design, creation, and publication of marketing materials, in both print and website pages.

 

· Administer the budget of approximately $400,000 of operating funds, while displaying stewardship of finances and ensuring compliance with the University policies and procedures. Prepare budget and ad hoc reports and analysis as requested by the Directors.

 

· Oversee HR/payroll operations for all non-academic regular and temporary administrative staff and undergraduate students including recruiting, salary, and training and performance evaluations. Provide day-to-day supervision of the administrative assistant and students. Oversee preparation of all academic appointments including faculty summer salary, research associates, visiting scientists, postdoctoral associates and graduate students in accordance with university policies and procedures. Validate yearly effort certification. Track and record faculty research effort. Acclimate new program affiliates to program and University procedures, policies, and opportunities. Cultivate and maintain collaborative and effective work relationships.

 

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree with 5 to 7 years’ experience, marketing background; fluent in English and Chinese; ability to travel to China at least once per year; preferred requirements MA/MS in economics, applied economics or public policy, or MBA. Excellent communication (written & oral), interpersonal, leadership, analytical, and organizational skills. Ability to take initiative, resolve conflict, and work in a collaborative manner. Demonstrated proficiency with a variety of software to include Microsoft Office Suite, and the ability to analyze and manipulate data, which leads to management decisions. Some experience with database management, website management and design preferred. Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines, handling sensitive, confidential material with discretion and tact. Must be able to function both as a contributing team member and independently, performing duties with minimal direction. Ability to perform multiple tasks under pressure, problem solve, and prioritize on a regular basis with a strong attention to detail. Will be required to handle unusual or difficult situations with compassion, sensitivity and professionalism while exercising sound judgment.

 

This position is an initial one-year appointment with renewal contingent upon secured funding and successful performance.
