Organization Background 

Chinese for Affirmative Action was founded in 1969 to protect the civil rights of Chinese Americans and to advance multiracial democracy in the United States. Today, CAA is a progressive voice in and on behalf of the broader Asian American and Pacific Islander (API) community. We advocate for systemic change that advance equity and address the challenges facing our community. 

At the grassroots level, our community building work nurtures the ability of immigrants to participate fully in civic life. These activities include employment services for limited-English proficient newcomers, outreach for immigrant legal services, and community education underscoring issues that impact our constituency. 

CAA also leads advocacy to improve public policy and to inform public discourse. We produce community-based research, publish policy analyses and recommendations, shape opinion through ethnic and mainstream media, and organize to engage elected and government officials. 

Position Summary 

Under the supervision of the Immigrant Rights Program Manager, the Community Advocate will work to engage low-income, limited English proficient, Chinese immigrant community members on immigrant services, rights, and other relevant issues that directly impact CAA’s constituency. This position involves in-language one-on-one client interaction and community outreach regarding immigration and language access assistance. The Community Advocate plays a crucial role in providing community members with culturally competent and accurate information with a critical social justice lens rooted in CAA’s values of inclusion, compassion, and equity. This position will engage with CAA’s collaborative partners as well in collaborations such as the San Francisco Immigrant Legal and Education Network, and the San Francisco Language Access Network. 

Key Responsibilities 

Provide direct services for community members seeking immigration support including basic pre-screenings, form filling, situational assessments, supporting clients in communicating with governmental institutions, providing clients with information on their rights, and referrals to legal and supportive services; 

Develop accessible outreach informational materials, fact sheets, and fliers, regarding relevant programs and updates to immigration policies, that promote a progressive API perspective on immigrant rights; 

Support the Immigrant Rights Program’s systems and infrastructure for tracking and reporting of activities and service provision; 

Ensure new immigrants are aware of local public services and available community resources; and 

Provide support to CAA’s organizational outreach, language access work, and service provision. 

Qualifications 

Bachelor’s degree in political science, ethnic studies, sociology or related field desired. 

Oral fluency in Cantonese required, written fluency in Chinese a plus. 

Proficient knowledge of the US immigration system 

Commitment to assisting limited English proficient immigrant families navigate government and institutions. 

Experience with outreach and flyering. 

Commitment to social justice and to CAA’s core values. 

Experience working in low-income and immigrant communities. 

Excellent inter-group, communication and analytical skills. 

Ability to work both independently and commitment to working as part of a team. 

Willingness to work flexible hours- including weeknights and weekends. 

Ability to work in fast paced environment. 

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Cloud. 

A valid driver’s license and access to a car a plus.
