Description The Chinese Language Director (CLD) works closely with the Center Director (CD), Chinese Language Curriculum Manager, Student Services Manager, several fulltime program coordinators, and the Chinese language instructor team, to deliver the highest standards of Chinese language teaching and customer satisfaction at the CIEE Study Center at East China Normal University in Shanghai.
The CLD is responsible for ensuring the highest levels of academic quality and effectiveness of language curriculum in all programs offered at the CIEE Study Center in Shanghai, which currently include the following:
- Accelerated Chinese Language
- Business, Language, and Culture
- China in a Global Context
- Summer Accelerated Chinese Language
- Summer Business and Culture
- Summer Internship
- Gap Year Abroad
- Faculty-Led and Custom Programs (FAC)

Specific Duties
Specific duties included but are not limited to:
LANGUAGE CURRICULUM MANAGEMENT:
- Manage, coordinate, and oversee all aspects of language curriculum
- Develop and implement high quality language curriculum for participants, from beginning through superior level of proficiency
- Develop coherent vision for language pedagogy
- Review, select, and develop study materials for all language courses
- Provide leadership to full-time and adjunct language instructors
- Provide training to full-time and adjunct language instructors on an ongoing basis
- Recruit and develop full-time and adjunct language instructors
- Take lead responsibility in designing co-curricular and extracurricular language learning components
- Manage student placement
- Provide academic advising to participants
- Monitor participants’ learning performance and progress
- Develop and implement language learning outcome assessment instruments
- Collect and report grades according to CIEE policies and procedures
- Develop and administer language course evaluations
- Promote language curriculum innovations at the center
TEACHING:
- Teach one to two language course(s) each term (Fall, Spring, Summer)
ADMINISTRATION:
- Under direction of CD, provide administrative support for all programs
- Assist CD to organize and implement site visits and other center promotion activities
- Assist CD to develop and deliver Online Pre-Departure Orientation (OPDO) and on-site orientations for all programs
- Attend meetings, including Director meeting, all staff meeting, and semester and annual planning meetings, with the CD, Manager of Student Services and other relevant staff to ensure that program goals are well articulated and that planned activities and excursions effectively support these goals
- Meet weekly with CD in private and/or as part of regular managerial meetings to report on progress and challenges
- Collaborate with Student Services team to organize and implement extracurricular, community engagement and cultural learning activities as well as student excursions
- Assist with annual budget planning process related to the Chinese language curriculum
- Take lead responsibility for drafting, updating, and maintaining key language program materials (language course syllabi, study materials, program catalogs, academic handbooks, pre-departure materials, newsletters, etc.)
- Conduct staff evaluations for the full-time Chinese language instructor team
- Plan and implement a language assessment infrastructure to evaluate student learning outcomes
- Maintain timely email communications with CIEE head office and external stakeholders by responding within 24 hours
- Assist CD to develop and maintain productive relationships with key partners in the local host university
MARKETING:
- Develop and maintain effective communications with US sending institutions and language faculty regarding the language curriculum
- Assist the CD to present the center and its programs to individual site visitors from prospective sending intuitions and to members of the CIEE consortium, and help host any CIEE group site visits and ACB program evaluators as needed
- Collaborate with the Manager of Student Services to draft weekly and monthly newsletters for CIEE stakeholders
- Review program catalogs, websites and marketing materials sent by the Portland office to check for accuracy and to incorporate any changes to programs
OTHER:
- Support the development and implementation of various new program proposals in line with CIEE’s strategic goals
- Other duties as assigned

The CLD is also accountable for:
- Vigilant monitoring of program standards and integrity
- Strong understanding of the governance mechanisms of CIEE and the roles and contributions of the ACB and its committees
- Maintaining the CIEE commitment to providing and preserving a safe and supportive environment for students and employees where individual ideas and uniqueness are recognized, valued, and given the opportunity to grow
Judgment, Decision-Making, and Planning
The CLD must be able to continually and often immediately apply sound judgment and knowledge to the expedient resolution of a broad range of issues related to, but not exclusive of, individual students, including emergencies, and the like.
Requirements
- Master’s degree required, PhD degree preferred, in the area of Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Education, or a related field
- Fluency in both English and Mandarin Chinese
- Extensive and innovative language teaching experience in Chinese language programs
- A minimum of 5 years language program management experience, preferably in study abroad, international education exchange, or related not-for-profit organization
- Previous experience studying abroad or working in China, in-depth knowledge of Chinese culture and society, and first-hand knowledge of U.S. and Chinese academic institutions and their culture
- Exceptional organizational skills and proven experience developing, implementing, and managing projects and processes
- Superior written and verbal communication skills in English
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, school officials, staff, and across various departments
- Excellent ability to work with colleagues as a team leader and team player in the appropriate context
- Proficiency with Microsoft suite of software

The CLD has access to confidential information regarding:
- Organizational changes and strategic initiatives;
- Budget information pertaining to the study center;
- Employee salary information and personnel files;
- Student personal, financial, physical and mental health records; and
- Student academic progress and performance.
The individual in this position must be able to simultaneously balance confidential information and information that can be/needs to be shared in order to effectively solve a variety of different issues. The individual must show superior judgment when dealing with confidential information.
Working Conditions
- This is a full-time and year-around position, with administrative responsibilities during fall, spring and summer terms
- Office hours are from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, five days per week, and may require working during weekends and holidays, also handling emergency response 24 hours/day, any day of the week
- This position requires travel 10% or more of the year, including domestic fieldtrips with students and possible international travel for institutional visits, conferences, and general meetings
