Job Description

Start Date: January, 2016 (preferable)
Reports to: Executive Director

Responsibilities

• Teaches three courses per academic year in an area designed to lead TBC academically. Offers periodic master lecture in his/her specialty.

• Recruits and retains qualified faculty, evaluates them and encourages their scholarship.

• Develops with faculty innovative semester courses and summer programs consistent with TBC’s mission.

• Reviews and approves syllabi in cooperation with Loyola University Chicago and our partner Jesuit universities.

• Oversees arrangement of teaching schedules and textbook selection. In coordination with Loyola University, oversees the registration of students in courses.

• Works closely with Chinese language instructors, assuring students are properly placed.

• Helps attract lecturers for China Contact’s short term programs (1-3 weeks duration).

• Oversees the operations and budget of the Academic Division.

• Manages the Academic division, including Academic advisor and part-time assistant and academic interns.

• Advises Executive Director on salary and compensations for Academic Division.

• Works with the Academic Advisor to gauge the progress of students at TBC.

• Promotes scholarly research, visiting scholars, and research fellowships.

• Oversees the expansion and selection of holdings in the TBC library.

About TBC

The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies promotes intercultural education; focuses on China through its semester course offerings and short-term programs (China Contact); and sponsors scholarly research. TBC, founded in 1998 as a collaborative effort of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, AJCU, is hosted by the University of International Business and Economics, UIBE, and partners with Loyola University Chicago for academic accreditation. TBC annually attracts 120 students and scholars primarily from Jesuit institutions of higher education in the USA but also from Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Classes are conducted in English by faculty from major universities, business and professional leaders and independent scholars. They are supported by TBC’s library, the largest English language collection on China in China.
