United Chinese Communities, through its Washington, DC-based National Asian American Center, is seeking interns in the areas of social research, communications and outreach, development, research, mobile app/website development to assist in facilitating UCC activities.
The mission of United Chinese Communities is to empower Chinese Americans to come together to serve, lead, and inspire.
Specifically, we advance the relations between China, the US, and the world as well as promote the general well-being of Chinese American and Asian American communities through policy advocacy, research, networking, information dissemination, leadership development, and community outreach and empowerment.
UCC does this by:
- Networking and strengthening Chinese American organizations in a federation so that their voices and concerns are heard throughout the world
- Supporting and enhancing US, Chinese, and global engagement and mutual understanding
- Inform and prepare public, private, and civic sector leaders for a complex global future impacted by the US and China on the world stage
- Provide a meeting place and nexus for Chinese, Chinese Diaspora, and Asian American communities to engage in domestic and international policy and advocacy
- Through its National Asian American Center (NAAC), be a think tank and research center for critical studies on politics, social and environmental change, and economic and trade relations
- Establishes programs for youth leadership among Chinese, Chinese Americans, and Asian Americans who will enrich knowledge and facilitate greater dialogue between the US and China
Most of these undergraduate and undergraduate internships are unpaid positions and require at least 10 hours during each semester or quarter. There is also the possibility of a summer stipend of $1,000 and Fall semester stipend of $500 and a Spring Semester stipend of $500 for qualifying applicants with advanced training (especially technical, fundraising, and computer programming) and/or graduate education who intern full time during the summer and at least 15 hours during the academic year.

We are located in the heart of Washington, DC in the K Street Corridor area, two blocks away from the White House. Three Metro station are very close-by (Farragut West, Farragut North, and McPherson Square).
Most of these undergraduate and graduate internships are unpaid positions and require at least 10 hours. Hours are flexible and negotiable. Some weekend and evening hours may be required.
Internship Start Date: Starting on August 31, 2015.
Internship Location: 910 17th Street, NW, 8th Floor, Washington, DC 20006, near Farragut West and Farragut North Metro Station.
Duration: Fall 2015, Winter 2015, and Spring 2016. Summer programs are part and full-time.
Undergraduate and Graduate Internships
UCC will offer internships in four areas –
Research Internships Interns will provide administrative and research support to researchers. Duties include: assisting with literature reviews and data collection; designing charts, graphs and tables; helping to conduct focus group interviews, answering phones; and filing, conducting statistical analysis with SPSS, and brainstorming on social/political issues. A great opportunity to learn hands-on research methods and applications.
Qualifications: Strong organizational skills, good interpersonal skills, interest in policy research and new immigrant/ethnic and racial minority issues; and experience with statistics, economics, or social sciences through coursework. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel required; knowledge of SPSS, GIS programs, or graphics software are a plus. Qualitative research skills also a plus.

Communications and Outreach Internships Interns will provide administrative and editorial support to the communications team. Duties include: event coordination; assisting with proofreading; distributing e-newsletters and new press releases; updating UCC blogs and social media; building media lists and managing databases; tracking news clips; assisting with layout and design of UCC products; answering phones; and filing.
Qualifications: Creative, innovative, and detail-oriented individual with good writing and computer skills; knowledge and experience with Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn; interest or knowledge of Weebly, NationBuilder, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Dropbox, Eventbrite, Paperless Post, iContact, iCloud, google apps, social media applications, or other desktop publishing software; layout and web design experience a plus.

Development and Fundraising Internships Interns will help the development team with direct mail, grant-management, funder research, and other elements of nonprofit fundraising. UCC receives support from foundations as well as individual and corporate supporters. These interns may also assist in payroll and accounting as well as financial compliance issues.
Qualifications: Should have an interest in fundraising and nonprofit management; familiarity with Microsoft Excel and prior experience with fundraising at any level is desirable, but not required; basic computer skills required and prior experience with Google apps, iContact, Cardscan, Linked-In, Wealth Engine, or other donor databases is a plus.

Mobile App and Website Development Internships Interns will help the development team developing mobile apps related to UCC activities and extend our UCC website with further functionality and data input. They will be involved in cutting edge website development using Weebly, SQL, WordPress, Apps, and other mobile app and website software. Intern should have a keen interest in utilizing technology for non-profit betterment.
Qualifications: Should have an interest in programming, sql, mobile app development, iOS and Android, WordPress, Google app programming, Weebly, etc.; familiarity with Microsoft Excel and prior experience is desirable, but not required; advanced computer skills desirable and prior experience with programming and database development a plus.

All UCC interns must have good computer skills, excellent writing and communication skills, and an interest in new immigrant and minority issues. Prior office experience is desirable.
