  • The China and Asia Pacific Studies (CAPS) program is within the College of Arts & Sciences, the largest college at Cornell University. An innovative undergraduate major at Cornell University, CAPS is a program designed to train future leaders who are equipped to address the inevitable challenges and negotiate the delicate complexities in the various domains of U.S.-China relations. CAPS has around 40 students in its major, four affiliated faculty, and three staff members. In addition to CAPS’ Ithaca-based operations, it also has academic programs at Peking University in Beijing, China and at Cornell in Washington. Management of CAPS is tied to Cornell University’s Department of Government.

    The CAPS Program Manager reports to the CAPS Academic Director and has primary responsibility for all academic and non-academic activities and programming on Cornell’s Ithaca campus, at Peking University in China (Běidà), and at Cornell in Washington. This responsibility includes administration and management of budgetary and reporting requirements, and developing and managing collaborations and partnerships with other departments and units at Cornell and at Běidà. It also includes administration and management of Cornell’s agreement and relationship with Běidà. In addition, this position is responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating informal academic activities for CAPS students, such as lecture series, student debates/presentations, conferences, dignitary visits, and social/cultural events, and formal academic activities such as coordinating and supporting CAPS courses. This position is responsible for developing marketing materials as well as developing and implementing publicity and outreach activities to Cornell students, high schools, the community, alumni, and donors, and recruits students to CAPS. The CAPS Program Manager identifies and applies for internal and external grants and develops and implements fundraising strategies and activities. This position also supervises the CAPS Program Coordinator in China, coordinates the activities of the professors and instructors who teach CAPS courses at Cornell in Washington, and supervises the CAPS Undergraduate Coordinator.

       

    Master’s degree plus 3-5 years administrative, programmatic, supervisory and financial experience or equivalent combination.  The CAPS Program Manager is a generalist, and as such, this position requires competencies across the functional areas. Requires managerial, organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills.  An in-depth understanding and appreciation of academic department activities and students is important.   A proven ability to simultaneously manage multiple areas, events and deadlines, demonstrated evidence of strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain a collaborative and effective work environment.  Demonstrated sound judgment and ability to protect confidential information.  Demonstrated mastery of business software, including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, email, database, and graphics programs.  Fluency in Chinese.  Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed. Ability to travel away from Ithaca as needed. Position requires travel to China approximately twice per year.

     

    Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with Cornell University financial, human resource, academic and other electronic systems and procedures. The ideal candidate will have teaching skills and experience to fill a nine month, .33 FTE CAPS Lecturer position and teach two courses.
