BASIC FUNCTION

The Publications and Translation Coordinator coordinates the editing and translation of all JLTCC publications including the China Thinkers Series. Drafts English center materials and commentaries; coordinates JLTCC Chinese language web content; and handles other translation requests.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in relevant field preferred. Other requirements: background in China Studies and understanding of Chinese politics and policy issues; strong skills as a writer and editor of academic text; superior research skills; excellent organizational and communication skills. Complete fluency in written and spoken English required. Minimum two years of translation and/or editing experience required, with excellent command of spoken and written Mandarin Chinese. Must be currently authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. Experience in marketing, web outreach, and contact management preferred. Must have ability to work independently and prioritize accordingly.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

Excellent writing, copyediting, grammar, spelling, and proofreading skills required. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Professional. Must be flexible, diplomatic, a good team-player, and able to work in a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication, organizational, and administrative skills required.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

65% Publications and Translation Coordination

  • Coordinates the translation and editing of the China Thinker Series and other major JLTCC publications.
  • Serves as primary editor/copyeditor of analysis papers, monographs, and other materials as assigned; works with the John L. Thornton Center and Brookings-Tsinghua Center’s scholars to ensure all translations are accurate and that all written products conform to Brookings standards.
  • Drafts and edits materials in English with scholars to draft materials for blogs, op-eds, and other non-academic articles.
  • Takes responsibility for all matters related to translation and editing of JLTCC publications including direct translation, contracts with external translators, copy-editing, and managing the production process of layout, proofing, distribution and storage.
  • Manages relationships and timelines with external translation and editing contractors; reviews external translations to ensure quality control; works with external translators and editors to ensure adherence to agreed-upon project timelines.
  • Oversees preparation of all bilingual written materials for major annual BTC and JLTCC events and other conferences as assigned, including printed program, participant biography book, briefing materials, and the Center prospectus.

20% Project and Research Support

  • Coordinates closely with FP communications staff and central COMM as needed to ensure all JLTCC and BTC publications reach the broadest audience possible to maximize impact.
  • Provides research support to JLTCC scholars with specific research-related translation requests, including Chinese-language research requests.
  • Coordinates preparation of bilingual materials for major JLTCC and other conferences, and assists with research support as needed.
  • Assists with scheduling for one senior scholar.

15% Other Translation Support

  • Coordinates translation for internal documents such as contracts and business communication.
  • Coordinates interpretation for public and private bilingual meetings.
