Shanghai’s Tongji University Upcycles 200 Abandoned Bikes to Create Campus Bike Share
If you’ve been to a university campus in China, you have most likely seen the snarl of bicycles congesting the bike racks, many of which have been left to rust. Luckily, Shanghai’s Tongji University has come up with a clever solution to the cluttered bike-parks: a free bike share for students using upcycled bicycles.
According to the Shanghaiist, the round-up started this summer (after giving the public ample notice) and Tongji university now has 200 bicycles available for students and faculty.
The bikes were fixed up, given a fresh coat of paint, and are now located around the campus at convenient spots such as the library and cafeteria.
The bikes are available from 8:30 AM til 4:30 PM, must be returned the same day they are used and can only be used on university property. However, they have already saved some students the hassle of purchasing and maintaining a bike, an experience many study abroad students can commiserate with.
The best part? They are free to use for anyone with a university ID.
It’s great to see common-sense solutions that solve multiple problems and we hope that this kind of innovation spreads to campuses around the country!
