Wealth and Power: China's Long March to the 21st Century | AmCham, China

Event Details

“Wealth and Power: China’s Long March to the Twenty-first Century” by Orville Schell and John Delury provides a sweeping history of the nation’s ascent from poverty and weakness into today’s global economic powerhouse, providing a framework for understanding the future that this singular country is helping shape for all of us, through a series of lively and absorbing portraits of iconic modern Chinese leaders and thinkers. The common goal that unites all disparate figures from Empress Dowager Cixi to Liang Qichao to Communist Party leader Mao Zedong is their determined pursuit of fuqiang, shorthand for “wealth and power.”

As the authors show, this abiding quest for a restoration of national greatness in the face of a “century of humiliation” at the hands of the Great Powers came to define the modern Chinese character. And, this determined quest remains the key to understanding many of China’s actions in the present era. The book “Wealth and Power” received very positive reviews by leading China and East Asia experts and newspapers including Foreign Affairs, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, The Economist, FT, and others.
