Lilly Sedaghat, Leadership Fellow from our inaugural cohort, has shared with us an exciting opportunity from the 1990 Institute for young bridge-builders and leaders to share their ideas about how to strengthen the US-China relationship. Those who enter by the Jan. 19th deadline will also have a chance to have their work shown at CAAMFest in San Francisco as well as $30,000 in cash prizes. This opportunity is available to Pengyous nationwide; let your voice be heard!
Youth Voices on China is the 1990 Institute’s signature video contest that engages American students to think more deeply about U.S.- China relations. The 1990 Institute hopes to inspire students to seek balanced viewpoints on China and empower them to make positive change through creative media. Share your U.S.-China cultural exchange idea with the President for $30K in prizes! Register TODAY and enter 1990 Institute’s video contest: Youth Voices on China by January 19, 2016!
The 1990 Institute and actress Joan Chen invites you to enter our $30K national video contest and submit a “Videogram to the White House.” If you’re a student age 13-30, this is your chance to get creative, get heard by the White House, and potentially make a difference in U.S.-China relations. Finalists will earn a trip to San Francisco and a full red-carpet experience with their video debut at CAAMFest, the nation’s preeminent Asian American film festival. Students’ sponsoring teachers can win, too!
Here’s what you need to do:
- Create a 2-3 minute video urging the President or future President to take BOLD ACTION to create a more POSITIVE bilateral relationship with China — explain WHY and briefly suggest HOW.
- Your Turn – What Can You Do? In your video, share your cultural exchange idea to collaborate with Chinese youth on an issue that matters to you. It could be saving the environment by biking with Chinese youth across your city, inspiring confidence in girls by designing a fashion show fundraiser featuring Taylor Swift’s new clothing line in China, or unleashing the power of friendship through a basketball tournament or online video game challenge mixing your schoolmates with students from China. The best ideas could involve the President, your favorite stars or heroes, or a group or company — dream big, as we’ll help transform the best idea into a reality!
- Required: Interview someone to add more umph! to your video and to provide a balanced view on your issue. Think of your favorite teacher, an expert or businessperson in your community. We’re sure the President will be impressed with the extra effort you put in to include outside research and incorporate creative storytelling.
