A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words: Decoding Chinese Characters

Early Chinese characters were much like pictographs, and it is still possible to find picture symbols in modern Chinese characters. While not all characters are in-your-face, taking a closer look for the pictures they contain not only helps you show off in class, but also memorize the character meanings! Project Pengyou intern Yixuan Lim breaks down Chinese characters into basic parts to show how they build meaning.

On June 25, Project Pengyou teamed up with local magazine The Beijinger and other local organizations to host a mixer at Home Plate BBQ in Sanlitun that brought together representatives from language schools and programs around Beijing. It concluded a month-long campaign to promote Mandarin study by various local organizations.
