Asia Society is pleased to present a special, year-end edition of the Asia: Beyond the Headlines series, with a top-flight panel of guests who will weigh in on the year that was, and what 2015 may have in store for Asia and for the world.

In December 2013, Asia Society Executive Vice President Tom Nagorski made fourteen predictions for 2014, taking a stab at forecasting “what might happen in Asia in the coming year.”  Some predictions proved true: elections in Afghanistan were more peaceful than many had dared to hope, and Joko Widodo and Narendra Modi won victories in elections in Indonesia and India. Others missed the mark: a long-term nuclear deal with Iran and the P5+1 countries has not been inked (at least not yet), and his World Cup predictions prove that sports prognostication may be better left to the experts.
2014 also brought crises that are straining the resolve of the international community: 2014 saw the rise of ISIS; a complex conflict in Ukraine; and stepped-up rhetoric over disputes in Northeast and Southeast Asia. Whether 2014 will be remembered as the beginning of a disintegration of world order will depend in part on what 2015 has in store. What opportunities for greater cooperation will arise? What will the headlines in 2015 bring — from India to Indonesia, the Strait of Malacca to the Yellow Sea, from free trade to GDP growth, the struggles against terrorism to the struggle against climate change? Which cultural and political figures will captivate and inspire us? Speakers:

Ian Bremmer is the President of Eurasia Group, a global political risk research and consulting firm and author of several books, most recently the national bestseller Every Nation for Itself: Winner and Losers in a G-Zero World.

Ruchir Sharma is head of Emerging Markets and Global Macro at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, and is the author of Breakout Nations: In Pursuit of the Next Economic Miracles.

Josette Sheeran is the President and CEO of Asia Society. Her long career of global leadership includes Vice Chairmanship of the World Economic Forum, and she served as the Executive Director of the World Food Program as well as in senior positions in the U.S. government.

Tom Nagorski (moderator) is the Executive Vice President of Asia Society. He previously had a three-decade career in journalism, most recently serving as Managing Editor of International Coverage at ABC News.
