With the rise of #OscarsSoWhite and demand for more diverse casting, the call for visibility of Asian Americans in television and film has garnered mainstream attention. What brought us to this moment, and how can we undo the damage of decades of erasure? This workshop will unpack longstanding tropes and stereotypes used to typecast Asian Americans in the media. We’ll also explore the progress (and missteps) of contemporary efforts to diversify the big and small screens. How can we—and our students—be critical consumers of media, even when that media is “only” meant to entertain?
Coffee and lunch provided.
