Growth in two-way foreign direct investment between the United States and China has been the biggest change at the margin in this key bilateral economic relationship, and is the most positive development balancing rising political risk costs caused by geo-strategic tension. Two-way FDI is big, it’s mutual, it’s driven by an objective commercial logic and it’s hard to pull the plug on due to short-term frictions. In short, it’s important new “ballast” that the US-China relationship needs. But keeping it a feel-good story presents its own challenges.
The talk will build on the research Mr. Rosen and RHG conducted for the recent report, “New Neighbors: Chinese FDI in the US by Congressional District”.
Daniel H. Rosen is a founding partner of RHG and leads the firm’s work on China. Mr. Rosen is affiliated with a number of American thinktanks focused on international economics. He is also an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University, where he has taught graduate seminars on the Chinese economy at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) since 2001. Mr. Rosen writes and speaks extensively on China and other emerging economy topics. He is a frequent contributor to major print and television media and high-level speaking events (including Aspen Institute, Caixin Magazine, Bloomberg and private client functions) on topics including China, Chinese investment flows and economic performance, and US-China economic relations.
From 2000-2001, Mr. Rosen was Senior Adviser for International Economic Policy at the White House National Economic Council and National Security Council, where he played a key role in completing China’s accession to the World Trade Organization and accompanied the President to Asia for summits and state visits. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and board member of the National Committee for US-China Relations.
There will be a cover charge payable at the door of RMB 40 for this event. The cover charge includes one free drink. Space is limited. RSVP required by June 8th.
