China’s economy has hit some speed bumps, taking some of the glow off its transition to global power. Yet despite slowing growth and geopolitical frictions, President Xi Jinping traveled tirelessly in 2015 to launch ambitious external policy initiatives. Join David Kelly, a political scientist, as he explains the aspirations of ‘Going Global 2.0’ and the headwinds that delay it in the short- and long-term.
David Kelly is a research director at China Policy, where he leads the geopolitics and governance and law teams. His current focus is the geopolitical impact of China’s governance model. First traveling to China in 1975-76 for language study, he took a PhD in Chinese studies at Sydney University. After a Fulbright fellowship at the University of Chicago, he steered a course between intellectual history and political science, later moving into policy analysis while a research fellow at the East Asia Institute in Singapore. He is currently also a visiting professor at Peking University. A sought-after international media commentator, he frequently appears in global print and web media.
