During this presentation, public opinion expert Richard Wike will explore the global images of the United States and China, drawing on the Pew Research Center’s extensive survey research on this topic, including a new poll of 16 countries: Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, the U.S. and 10 nations from the European Union. As the Obama presidency draws to a close, Dr. Wike will share data on global perceptions of the American leader as well as attitudes toward presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. He will also examine international attitudes toward China and views about the balance of power between the U.S. and China, including key findings from a major 2015 survey on public opinion in the Asia-Pacific region regarding the U.S. strategic “pivot” toward Asia.
Richard Wike is Director of Global Attitudes Research at the Pew Research Center, conducting research and writing about international public opinion on a variety of topics, including global views of the United States and China, globalization, democracy and development. Prior to joining the Pew Research Center, he was Senior Associate for international and corporate clients at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research and served as Project Manager for Macro International. Dr. Wike was formerly Senior Research Analyst with Schapiro Research Group, where he managed projects for political campaigns, issue organizations and corporations. He received his BA from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and his PhD in Political Science from Emory University, where he also taught courses on voting behavior and public opinion, political parties, legislative politics and American politics.
