If Gustav Mahler and the four Chinese poets included in the composer’s song-symphony Das Lied von der Erde were to meet for a drink, they would surely have a jolly good time. So claimed Daniel Ng, the Hong Kong businessman and self-styled music entrepreneur who devoted much effort in prompting a retroactive encounter.
With the help of musical and literary scholars, Ng refitted Mahler’s early 20th century German-language masterpiece with the original poems of Tang Dynasty poets Li Bai, Qian Qi, Meng Haoran and Wang Wei. The piece had its premiere at the British Library in 2004 and was subsequently recorded by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for BIS Records.
Sung in Cantonese (to better replicate ancient Chinese pronunciation), the piece will have its Hong Kong premiere featuring mezzo-soprano Ning Liang and tenor Justin Lavender with the newly formed Philharmonia APA conducted by Sharon Andrea Choa. The performers will continue onward to Vienna, where they open the Hong Kong-Vienna Music Festival, under the auspices of the Vienna Boys Choir Music Academy Foundation.
