Rethinking China: Can China Lead in the Age of De-Globalization?

Event Details

China has risen in recent decades through its engagement with the world. How will a de-globalizing world affect China and the rest of us? Harvard Business School Professor William Kirby, a historian and expert on Chinese business, will explore China’s potential in power, infrastructure, entrepreneurship, and education in this moment of apparent American retreat

Kirby’s most recent book is “Can China Lead?: Reaching the Limits of Power and Growth” (Harvard Business School Press). Kirby will examine China’s options and opportunities in the era of Brexit, Trump, and Xi Jinping, and of growing authoritarian nationalism across the globe. Dorinda Elliott, director of the China Institute Center for Business, will moderate a Q&A following Kirby’s presentation.

Kirby is the Spangler Family Professor at Harvard Business School and the Chang Professor of China Studies at Harvard University. He chairs the Harvard China Fund and the Harvard Center Shanghai, and served as dean of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He has authored more than 40 HBS cases on contemporary Chinese business.
