For the first time in its almost 60-year history, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s famous annual Boyer Lecture Series will be recorded overseas, here in Beijing at Peking University on Friday 25 September. In his lecture, Dr Fullilove will describe the various challenges to global peace and prosperity and the way that the international order is changing.

For the first time in its almost 60-year history, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s famous annualBoyer Lecture Series will be recorded overseas, here in Beijing at Peking University on Friday 25 September. Dr Michael Fullilove, Executive Director of the Lowy Institute will deliver the first lecture, ‘Present at the Destruction’, in his four-part Boyer Lecture series.

In his lecture, Dr Fullilove will describe the various challenges to global peace and prosperity and the way that the international order is changing. Issues that will be addressed include the changing role of the United States and other Western powers in the global order. The speech will examine the breakdown of the state system in the Middle East and transnational issues such as climate change and terrorism. A particular focus will be the growing importance of Asia as the centre of global wealth and power, including the remarkable success achieved by China over the past three decades.

Dr Michael Fullilove, Executive Director, Lowy Institute for International Policy

Dr Fullilove has been associated with the Lowy Institute since its establishment. He has also worked as a Visiting Fellow in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, an adviser to Prime Minister Paul Keating, and a lawyer. He remains a Nonresident Senior Fellow at Brookings.

Dr Fullilove writes widely on Australian foreign policy, US foreign policy and global issues in publications including The New York Times, Financial Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, The National Interest and Foreign Affairs, as well as the Australian press. He is a sought-after media commentator and speaker in Australia and abroad, appearing on programs such as Radio National Breakfast, Lateline and the Charlie Rose Show. He graduated in arts and law from the Universities of Sydney and New South Wales, with dual university medals. He also studied as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford, where he took a master’s degree and a doctorate in international relations.

The ABC Boyer Lectures

Each year, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) presents the ABC Boyer Lectures. The Boyer Lectures is a series of talks by prominent Australians chosen by the ABC Board to present ideas on major social, scientific or cultural issues. The Boyer Lectures began in 1959 and are named after the late Sir Richard Boyer, who was chairman of the ABC.

The Lectures are broadcast on the ABC’s RN (Radio National) network. RN is broadcast on over 260 frequencies around Australia, making it the largest single network in the country. It has become known as the Ideas Network, where people can hear the latest in science, books and publishing, religion, social history, the arts and current affairs. RN can be heard worldwide through the ABC’s online streaming service. Earlier this year, the ABC launched an online portal in China— AustraliaPlus.cn—which connects the ABC with significant audiences in China and provides access to the best of Australian content. This year, the Boyer Lectures will be available through Australia Plus.
