How Has China Changed You? | China Hang-up
The image of Chinese who live in Western countries is that, over time, they become more open-minded and critical of their own country. But what happens to the outlook of foreigners after a long sojourn in China?
This is the question Global Times recently put forth to its readers in a writing contest. As one might imagine, the finalists all painted a very rosy picture of how China had changed them. For today’s episode, we thought we’d try to give a more rounded answer. On loan to us from the Sinica Podcast is one of the longest-term expats we know: Kaiser Kuo. Together we explore how—for better or worse—China has changed us.

Before I went to China, I was the biggest fanboy of all time. I studied Mandarin ravenously. Then I went to China. Horrifying.
Was there for about 6 years working for an International company. By the end of my time in China, I didn’t even want to speak Mandarin anymore. Hearing strangers talk about you, badmouthing you, hearing it from waitresses/waiters, will drive you nuts. I have heard on several occasions ‘Get out of our country’ from complete strangers (always men).
Hit the 故宫, and get the F out. China has the best PR money can buy. I fell for it. You don’t have to.
You’re living in a country with no rule of law, and without an international banking system. Of course you feel insecure.
By the way, now that I’m back in the real world, no one stares at me, and no one horks. Its amazing :).
Haha, yeah, sometimes I get pissed off how easy the Chinese students in town get it, I feel I should blatantly stare at them or shout a mocking ‘Ni hao’ or two just to even things up!
Hey there just wanted to give you a quick heads up.
The words in your post seem to be running off the screen in Ie.
I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I thought
