Welcoming Students from China: Mindsets and Strategies

Workshop: Center for Chinese Studies | September 30 | 2:30-4:30 p.m. | International House, Home Room

Jason Patent, Center for Intercultural Leadership

International House

Students from China continue to come to UC Berkeley in ever-greater numbers. What roles can each of us play in ensuring that we all make the most of this learning opportunity, both for the students and for ourselves? How can we bring awareness to our own and others’ stereotypes, so that we might transform them into learning opportunities? Through thoughtful conversation and inquiry, we will spend two hours exploring these and other questions.

After the workshop participants will be better able to:

* Understand the unique cultural challenges faced by students from China, from their perspective
* Interact with students from China in ways that help them feel included and understood, ultimately facilitating their success
* Have conversations with colleagues that improve their understanding of the challenges faced by students from China
* Help Chinese students better adapt to academic life on a U.S. campus

Please note that you will be asked to spend about five minutes prior to the workshop completing a brief survey, so that we may tailor the workshop to the participants’ needs.
