The Chinese History Teacher at SYA-China is a full time position. The Chinese History Teacher reports directly to the Resident Director (RD). S/he is responsible for teaching three to four seminar style sections (avg. 12-15 students/section) of Chinese History to bright, motivated 11th and 12th grade students from top US public and independent schools. In addition to teaching related responsibilities, the Chinese History Teacher shares, with other faculty members, other academic and no academic duties as elaborated below.

Chinese History Teacher Job Description

 

            The Chinese History Teacher at SYA-China is a full time position. The Chinese History Teacher reports directly to the Resident Director (RD). S/he is responsible for teaching three to four seminar style sections (avg. 12-15 students/section) of Chinese History to bright, motivated 11th and 12th grade students from top US public and independent schools. In addition to teaching related responsibilities, the Chinese History Teacher shares, with other faculty members, other academic and no academic duties as elaborated below.    

 

Specific areas of responsibility and job expectations include:

 

A.     Report directly to the Resident Director (RD)

 

B.     Adhere to SYA curriculum guides

 

C.     Teach three to four seminar style sections (avg. 12-15 students/section) of Chinese History

1.        Each section of Chinese History meets four 45-minute periods a week.

2.        The Chinese History course covers modern Chinese history from the late Qing Dynasty through the present with attention to selected pre Qing topics.

3.        Students are exposed to a combination of secondary and primary sources. 

4.        Assessment of student performance should employ a number of instruments with an emphasis on expository and analytical writing as well as public speaking.

5.        Letter grades and qualitative assessments of student progress are required at the end of each quarterly marking period. 

 

D.     Attend scheduled planning sessions with other faculty members in order to insure coordination and integration across the curriculum and co-curriculum.

 

E.     Communicate with parents and home schools via email and telephone to discuss student concerns as needed.

 

F.     Serve as faculty advisor to a group of ten or so students.

 

G.     Fulfill other required duties such as attending all scheduled meetings and supervising school-sponsored activities as needed at the request of the RD.

 

H.     Chaperone school trips as needed at the request of the RD.

 

I.       Serve on a disciplinary committee when student discipline issues arise as needed at the request of the RD.

 

J.      Be available to serve as “on duty” faculty member during school vacations as needed at the request of the RD.
