Located on two campuses in Vermont, Middlebury Interactive Languages Summer Academy offers middle and high school students the opportunity to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, or Spanish with skilled language educators in an intensive four week immersion environment. We are looking for Residential Advisers at our Chinese Academy to ensure the safety and well-being of students, as well as coach and mentor students during informal learning times.

Job Description

Residential Advisers are primarily responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of students and are also vital to coaching and mentoring students during informal learning times. RAs and other residential staff create a supportive, positive, living/learning community that fosters students’ growth in language and character. The Academy immersion experience allows students to learn the language by interacting in different contexts and through diverse experiences. The RAs role as mentor, coach, and teacher is key to student success at the Academy. RAs receive some time off each day, but should expect a demanding experience that requires full engagement and participation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Interaction Responsibilities:

  • Live in the residence halls and supervise a living group of approximately 12 middle or high school students.

  • Demonstrate a positive countenance as a role model to students through proactively upholding Academy behavioral standards and appropriately and consistently enforcing rules and policies when necessary.

  • Engaged and present with students at all times when academic classes are not in session, creating and promoting a positive, professional, fun and rewarding experience in the Academy community.

  • Mentor and coach students in language, assisting readily with stressful realities of the language immersion environment.

  • Speak only the target language when in the presence of students.

  • Be mindful of and proactive about student safety both on and off campus. Model responsible environmental stewardship by encouraging students to clean up after themselves, both on and off campus.

Operational Responsibilities:

  • Assist with planning and implementing the daily morning assembly and conducting nightly group meetings by actively promoting lively, interactive participation.

  • Complete weekly student evaluation forms.

  • Assist with evening and co-curricular programming, including student interest clubs

  • Assist with planning and implementing the activities program and all other Academy specific events and activities with positive spirit and interactions.

  • Attend and constructively participate in daily staff meetings.

  • Agree to uphold the Academy behavioral standards and appropriately enforce rules and policies when necessary

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in pre-season training delivered electronically.

  • Participate in Academy programming.
  • Work to continually maintain a high-quality summer Academy through interaction, participation and visibility throughout the program.

  • Support the Language Pledge.

  • Communicate professionally and effectively to parents, students and other staff.

  • Provide meaningful feedback to students.

  • Work with other faculty, staff, and site administrators to create a successful Academy.

  • Complete evaluations, reports and other documentation in a timely manner.

  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge and utilization of the Academy policies and procedures to create a safe, supportive, rewarding environment for students and staff.

Experience and Skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working with middle and/or high school students, preferably in a residential setting.

  • College RA experience is desirable.

  • Advanced proficiency in Chinese language and intimate knowledge of the culture

Additional Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates enthusiastic and empathic connection to youth

  • Previous leadership experience.

  • Understands the advantages and challenges of an immersion experience.

  • Possesses a detailed understanding of the rigors and responsibilities of the Academy, including commitment to maintaining Language Pledge, time off structure, and being primary reinforcers of language learning outside of the classroom.

  • Demonstrates commitment to uphold and enforce Academy rules and policies.

  • Possesses high degree of motivation, creativity, and commitment to giving 100 percent of energy to the Academy for 5 weeks.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION:

This is a residential position. Pay is $3,000 – $3,200. All employees will also be provided room and board and will have two full days off during the 4-week session. All employees pay for their travel to and from program locations. Transportation from the local airport or train station is provided at both the beginning and the end of the program by MIL.
