Chinese Village Business Manager

Responsibilities:

  • Perform all duties as set forth in the Concordia Language Villages Business Manager’s Manual 
  • Record all Village expenditures and maintain relevant files 
  • Handle lost-and-found articles as directed by the dean 
  • Maintain an office inventory and supervise all Village inventories 
  • Do word processing, duplication, etc., as designated by the dean 
  • Make town runs as necessary for supplies and coordinate trips made with Village vehicle 
  • Serve as a receptionist for all visitors, and answer phone calls 
  • Transport villagers in Village van to and from medical appointments, airports and other transportation terminals 
  • Maintain villager attendance records, and assist with cabin and language-level assignments 
  • Coordinate transportation requests, and meet villagers and staff at terminals 
  • Collect fees as requested by the Concordia Language Villages office 
  • Perform additional duties as designated by the dean (such as supervising maintenance repair list, collecting staff reports, coordinating plans for International Day, etc.) 
  • Assume responsibility for counseling duties as designated by the dean

Compensation 
$228 for a one-week period*, room and board. *Pay rate is per one-week period (not two week period). Stipend for orientation is equivalent to one-week pay.

General Responsibilities:

  •  Be familiar with and abide by specific policies set forth in the “Personnel Policies,” which are designated by Concordia Language Villages administration and individual Village deans. 
  • Read and become familiar with the responsibilities for your specific area of assignment. 
  • After receiving your Staff Handbook and other material from the Village dean, read all information carefully and thoroughly before arriving at the Village. 
  • Be advised the entire staff of each Village is under the direction of and is responsible to the dean. While some positions are supervised by other staff, the dean retains ultimate authority and responsibility for the Village. 
  • Report to orientation prior to your first session as designated by your staff agreement. 
  • Assist with setting up the Village, preparing for the next session, and maintaining the Village throughout the session. 
  • Speak the target language with villagers and staff members as much as possible. 
  • Live in community living arrangements, assigned according to gender identity. Nearly all positions include living, sleeping and sharing communal bathroom facilities in a unit with villagers (participants); positions that do not include living with villagers do include living with other staff members
  • Model standards for behavior and be sensitive to the health and welfare of the villagers. 
  • Remain one day after your final session for cleanup, inventory and evaluation of the program.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age 
  • Business-related major or equivalent experience 
  • Experience with word processing, computers, office machines, filing, bookkeeping, etc. 
  • Oral proficiency in the language 
  • Current driver’s license and insurable record 
  • Record-keeping skills and strong attention to detail 
  • Native speaker or native-like proficiency in English, preferred

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Emotional resiliency and cognitive abilities to carry out job responsibilities, ability to establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships, interpersonal skills to interact effectively with individuals and groups respecting social and cultural diversity and to maintain appropriate boundaries. 
  • Ability to assist villagers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury); possess strength, physical ability, and endurance to maintain constant supervision of villagers; observe villager behavior, assess its appropriateness and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques; possess visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the cabin group.
  • Ability to use a computer; use a telephone; order supplies; drive a van and complete errands in town; carry and load supplies; maintain Village record system. 
  • Ability to train staff; observe staff and villager behavior; see and respond to hazards; work with different age and skill levels; plan, conduct and evaluate designated activities; observe, assess, and coach the work efforts of staff being supervised; use a telephone.
