The Chicago Project on Security and Terrorism (CPOST) is an international security affairs research institute based at the University of Chicago. Founded in 2004 by Robert Pape, Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, CPOST is best known for creating and maintaining the most comprehensive and transparent suicide attack database available. Since its creation, it has expanded beyond terrorism research, to now include the study of U.S.-China relations and intervention policy, with the goal of creating new knowledge and policy initiatives to inform decision-makers. CPOST’s goal is to produce peer-reviewed scholarship that bridges the gap between scholars and policymakers via conferences and media engagement, and strives to develop scholarship and policies that reduce security threats and enhance stability in regions around the world. Future projects include: the Social and Neurological Construction of Martyrdom, Early Warning of Militant Attacks in the West, and How Militant Groups Adapt to Over-the-Horizon Counterterrorism/Insurgency Policy.  

Under administrative guidance and review, collaborates with researchers in designing, implementing, and monitoring research projects and assumes primary responsibility for the analysis and presentation of project data. Collaborates with researchers and assists in developing objectives, designing sampling, randomization, and data collection procedures to achieve study objectives. Analyzes data and prepares tables for interim and final reports. Designs tables and statistical procedures for specific research studies. Collaborates with other research support personnel, including analysts and programmers in monitoring and assessing data quality. Reviews computer output for consistency and quality. Writes the results section of reports and publications. May write statistical computer programs.  

Education/Skills/Experience

  • BA required, advanced degree referred in political science or other social sciences with emphasis on quantitative studies.
  • Experience with Stata and Regression Analysis. 
  • Experience conducting research and working with research teams. 
  • Experience meeting deadlines.  
  • Comfortable with creating and maintaining online databases and learning new software. 
  • Ability to prepare PowerPoint slides summarizing data. 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously
