We are looking for a Diversity Relations Manager to join IES Abroad.

The Diversity Relations Manager will assist the Director of Diversity Recruiting & Advising in developing and managing on-going relationships with IES Abroad consortium study abroad advisors relevant functional offices like multicultural affairs, student organizations, and faculty as appropriate, for diversity outreach purposes. Additionally, the role will assist in recruiting student applicants and enrollees of diverse and non-traditional backgrounds.

The IES Abroad Diversity Department is responsible for implementing the Initiative to Diversify Education Abroad (IDEA). The IDEA has three primary functions: 1) to recruit underrepresented students to apply and attend IES Abroad standard, internship, and customized programs; 2) to provide top quality, pre-departure advising, preparation, and service unique to the needs of underrepresented students and students who have historically faced adversity, as needed; 3) to provide high-quality diversity-related guidance and resources to U.S. colleges and universities in the IES Abroad consortium, and to provide leadership on diversity matters in the field of education abroad overall.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience working with, advising, or recruiting students in the field of study abroad, diversity, or multicultural affairs in a secondary education or higher education.

Job Description

Status: Full-time, exempt

Schedule: M-F, 8.30a.m. – 4.30p.m, including occasional evening and weekend work and approximately 40% travel based on seasonal business needs and position requirements.

Location: Chicago, IL 

Summary of position:

The IES Abroad Diversity Department is responsible for implementing the Initiative to Diversify Education Abroad (IDEA). The IDEA has three primary functions: 1) to recruit underrepresented students to apply and attend IES Abroad standard and customized programs; 2) to provide top quality, pre-departure advising, preparation, and service unique to the needs of underrepresented students and students who have historically faced adversity, as needed; 3) to provide high quality diversity-related guidance and resources to U.S. colleges and universities in the IES Abroad consortium, and to provide leadership on diversity matters in the field of education abroad overall. This position will assist the Director of Diversity Recruiting & Advising in implementing this initiative.

Essential job responsibilities & duties:

  • Assist Director of Diversity Recruiting & Advising in developing and managing on-going relationships with IES Abroad consortium study abroad advisors and offices of multicultural affairs, and faculty as appropriate, for diversity outreach purposes. 
  • Assist in recruiting student applicants and enrollees of diverse and non-traditional backgrounds.
  • Assist in establishing relationships with advisors, administrators, and faculty of non-IES Abroad member colleges and universities as regards IES Abroad’s diversity initiative opportunities, resources, and support for staff and students.
  • Work closely with IES Abroad’s Student Services team to assist with student advising for students seeking assistance unique to their diverse backgrounds.
  • Provide support as a creative strategist to develop new approaches for reaching targeted diversity recruitment, relevant college relations outreach goals, staff diversity training needs, and diversity scholarships fundraising objectives
  • Assist in developing and updating diversity-related materials, Web content, image database, student data analysis, student databases, proposals and other items that help meet the recruiting, advising, and leadership objectives of the Diversity Department.
  • Execute related administrative tasks, as needed, and other projects and duties as assigned.

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience working with, advising, or recruiting students in a higher education setting is preferred
  • Experience in the field of study abroad, diversity, or multicultural affairs in a secondary education or higher education setting is a plus
  • Personal study abroad experience preferred, but not necessary
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and database literacy
  • Exceptional team player: proactive and responsible, with the ability to learn rapidly
  • US-based travel will be required (estimated at 25% seasonally)

Education, Licenses and/or Certifications etc: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Must have valid US Driver’s license and ability and willingness to drive as required

Physical demands:

  • This job requires US-based travel, by car and/or airplane, estimated at 50% seasonally  – some nights and weekends required
  • Must be able to drive several hours per day, as needed (approx. 25%)
  • Ability to remain in a seated position for the majority of the day (between 70% -100% of work time) in a workstation
  •  Ability to work for extended and continuous periods operating a computer, phone and other office equipment i.e., a copier and computer printer (between 70% -100% of work time)
  •  Need to occasionally move about office to access file cabinets from 5% to 10% of work time 
  • Ability to lift or move supplies, equipment, boxes, documents and materials weighing up to 40lbs from 10% to 15% of work time in office as well as in conjunction with travel
  • Must be able to communicate via phone, email, and in-person with employees, students, parents and intuitional contacts for the majority of the day (between 70% -100% of work time)

Working conditions/Environment: 

  • Must be available to participate in 24/7 emergency coverage (by cell phone), as needed
  • This job requires US-based travel, by car and/or airplane, estimated at 50% seasonally
  • May be required to work some nights and weekends as required by the needs of the department and this position
  • Must be able to work in office on a daily basis
  • Due to open floor plan environment, this workspace may experience varying noise levels
  • The workspace is well lit but may not have direct natural light
  • Responsible for purchases via company credit card and ability to process expense reports in a timely and accurate manner
  • Follow procedures set by IES Abroad policy with regards to business expenditures/travel costs
