Overview

Job Description

THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The National Committee offers both full- and part-time internships in New York City for undergraduate and graduate students. The internship is unpaid, but commuting costs are reimbursed. This is an entry level position which generally includes a variety of administrative and program assignments.

If you want to keep your finger on the pulse of the changing U.S.-China relationship, intern with the National Committee. Being able to interact with some of the most prominent China watchers in the field on a daily basis gave me a real-time understanding of what is happening geopolitically and internally in China. During my internship, I helped construct news and academic briefs for NCUSCR educational exchange programs and host public programs that brought together top scholars, journalists, and government officials. Through productive dialogue and international exchange, the National Committee continues to be on the forefront of U.S.-China relations, and, as an intern, I was given the fantastic opportunity to play a part.

OUR ORGANIZATION

The National Committee on United States-China Relations is a nonprofit educational organization that encourages understanding of China and the United States between citizens of both countries. The Committee’s continuity of experience and depth of associations with senior officials and distinguished citizens of China and the United States make it a unique national resource. Established in 1966 by a broad coalition of scholars and civic, religious, and business leaders, the Committee was founded in the belief that vigorous debate of China policy among Americans was essential and that balanced public education could clarify U.S. interests and strengthen our foreign policy. Similarly, the founders believed that over time dialogue with Chinese citizens would enhance mutual understanding, a basic requirement for stable and productive relations.

Over the decades, the Committee’s basic purposes have not changed, although programs have been developed in response to shifting needs and opportunities. The Committee focuses its exchange, educational, and policy programs on international relations, economic development and management, governance and legal affairs, environmental and other global concerns, mass communication, and education administration — addressing these issues with respect to mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The Committee’s programs draw strength from its members, who now number more than 800 Americans from all parts of the country and 80 corporations and professional firms. They represent many viewpoints, but share the belief that increased public knowledge of China and U.S.-China relations requires ongoing public education, face-to-face contact and forthright exchange of ideas.

For more than half a century, the National Committee has been on the front lines of the dynamic Sino-American relationship, from the historic U.S. tour of the Chinese ping pong team to President Xi Jinping’s 2015 visit to Seattle. Throughout our history, we have fostered constructive relations for the benefit of both countries and the global community. As the relationship has evolved and grown in complexity over time, the National Committee has responded to immediate crises and systemic shifts by providing a platform for dialogue and by creating relevant, high-impact programs.

The work of the National Committee is made possible by grants from the United States Department of State, private foundations, corporate sponsors, and the Committee’s members and other interested citizens. The Committee is classified by the IRS as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.
