Job Description
The Internship Coordinator will represent American Councils in his/her actions and words during the tenure of appointment. The Coordinator will perform outreach efforts to nonprofit, public, and private sector employers in order to obtain internships for Chinese Flagship students, and assist program participants regarding internship placement. The Coordinator will also liaise with Flagship staff members at American Councils and at the Nanjing Center. The successful candidate should be able to communicate with students about aspects of job-search activities, conduct pre-internship orientation and workshops, as well as collaborate closely with internship providers to ensure suitable internship placements that meet Flagship objectives.
Prior to departure for China, the Flagship Internship Coordinator must attend an American Councils’ orientation and participate in a two-week training session in DC. The Internship Coordinator reports to Chinese Overseas Flagship Program Manager at American Councils and to the Nanjing Chinese Flagship Center Director. This is a 2 year appointment with possible extension contingent upon funding availability and visa restrictions.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Working closely with the Internship Director, American Councils, providers and students to ensure continuity of internship placements and that the academic and cultural objects of Flagship are met;
- Working on various clerical responsibilities which includes creating reports, tracking student progress, collecting materials and conduct follow-ups;
- Serving as academic and personal counselor for Chinese Flagship Internship students;
- Ensuring that students comply with American Councils rules and local government regulations;
- Facilitating the negotiation and placement of various internship opportunities in all parts of China from public, private, and nonprofit sectors for students of various academic disciplines and interests;
- Coordinating internship logistics, including conducting pre-internship workshops and training, assisting with student in-country travel to internship sites, assessment scheduling and other related tasks;
- Creating and devising internship newsletters and materials as needed;
- Meeting with Flagship students to discuss internship placement and concerns;
- Communicating regularly (via skype and weekly report) with the American Councils Washington office, reporting any problems regarding participants’ health, performance, or behavior, and general updates; and submit a final report on overall internship placement experiences for students and providers;
- Participating in pre-program orientation and attending meetings as requested;
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree required;
- Professional graduate degree such as MBA, MPA, MPP in Chinese language or area studies or equivalent preferred;
- U.S. Citizenship required;
- Extensive prior study, work, and travel experience in China;
- Willingness to relocate to China for a minimum of 2 years;
- Experience working with and guiding American students;
- Extensive knowledge in cultural nuances and building collaborative relationships in China required;
- Demonstrated skills in academic and personal counseling;
- Ability to be flexible and work independently without supervision.
