Job Description
2015 Model Foundation Program
Philanthropy in Motion is seeking to support 3 outstanding undergraduate/graduate students who have both exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishments in the social sector to participate in the 2015 Model Foundation program as Model Foundation Fellows.
With a mission to provide young people with the funds, training, and networks to become intelligent givers, Philanthropy in Motion (PIM) is partnering with the University of Hong Kong (HKU) to organize Model Foundation, an international philanthropy summer program that brings together young people from around the world to learn about China and Hong Kong’s social sector. Our participants will investigate social issues, evaluate different programs, and experiment with grant-making. Together, they will learn about and engage in intelligent charitable giving by deciding how to distribute a PIM fund (20,000 USD) to impactful nonprofits and social enterprises.
Track 1 – Course
July 1 – Aug 9: Online Philanthropy Course and Due Diligence (4 hours per week)
Students will divide into teams to begin researching and generating profiles for the NGOs. PIM will provide students with evaluative tools to write memos and will organize live stream online classrooms to facilitate pre-conference preparation as well as collaboration. As students research and investigate the finances of NGOs, they will enhance their analytical skills and increase their working knowledge of the specific philanthropic space that the organization occupies. PIM will also help students reach out to and conduct interviews with the directors, staff, and their service audience over the phone or in person.
Aug 10 – 15: Conference at The University of Hong Kong
All Model Foundation participants will convene in Hong Kong to act as Grant Committee Officers. During the conference, Officers will convene for roundtable discussions within committees and make a collective decision on one or more organization(s) to fund. Conference sessions include interactive workshops led by foundation leaders, dialogue with experienced philanthropists, deliberation sessions to evaluate NGOs, in addition to site visits to finalist NGOs. A panel of experienced philanthropists and social sector leaders will judge the group’s final decision for thoroughness of evaluation and rigor of analysis.
Track 2 – Course + Internship
In addition to attending the online course and conference listed above, students can apply to be placed in a 6-8 week internship during the summer (starting in June/July). Students can choose from a variety of internships that are based in Hong Kong and mainland China including foundations, impact investing firms, CSR departments, NGOs, and social enterprises. Their work could involve: program development and evaluation, sales and business development, fundraising, social media and marketing strategy, web design, etc.
