The Political Science/Economics Teacher at SYA-China is a part time position. S/he reports directly to the Resident Director (RD) and is responsible for teaching one to two seminar style sections (avg. 12-15 students/section) of Political Science and Economics pertinent to the Chinese context to bright, motivated 11th and 12th grade students from top US public and independent schools. Political Science/Economics Teacher Job Description
The Political Science/Economics Teacher at SYA-China is a part time position. S/he reports directly to the Resident Director (RD) and is responsible for teaching one to two seminar style sections (avg. 12-15 students/section) of Political Science and Economics pertinent to the Chinese context to bright, motivated 11th and 12th grade students from top US public and independent schools. In addition to teaching related responsibilities, the Political Science/Economics Teacher shares, with other faculty members, other academic and no academic duties as elaborated below.
Specific areas of responsibility and job expectations include:
A. Report directly to the Resident Director (RD)
B. Adhere to SYA curriculum guides
C. Teach one to two seminar style sections (avg. 12-15 students/section) of Political Science/Economics:
1. Each section meets four 45-minute periods a week.
2. The study of international political economy and globalization in relation to China is at the heart of this course. The course introduces students to the study of economic processes and institutions, as well as to major political philosophies and ideologies, from Karl Marx to the present. Special attention will be devoted to the study of government and politics of the Chinese state.
3. Assessment of student performance should employ a number of instruments with an emphasis on expository and analytical writing as well as public speaking.
4. Letter grades and qualitative assessments of student progress are required at the end of each quarterly marking period.
D. Attend scheduled planning sessions with other faculty members in order to insure coordination and integration across the curriculum and co-curriculum.
E. Communicate with parents and home schools via email and telephone to discuss student concerns as needed.
F. Fulfill other required duties such as attending all scheduled meetings and supervising school-sponsored activities as needed at the request of the RD.
G. Serve on a disciplinary committee when student discipline issues arise as needed at the request of the RD.
H. Be available to serve as “on duty” faculty member during school vacations as needed at the request of the RD.
