Summary of the Confucius Institute: 

On April 16, 2015, Alabama A&M University (AAMU) officially launched the Confucius Institute (CIAAMU). This is a particularly significant initiative for the University; we are proud to be among an elite group of universities to host this prestigious Institute. CIAAMU provides teaching, research, and outreach opportunities related to China, Chinese language, and Chinese culture to students, faculty, and staff at AAMU and other institutes, business entities, local communities and K-12 schools. 

Summary of the Position: 

The Program Coordinator position will develop and coordinate teaching, research, and outreach activities; serve as the liaison between the Director of CIAAMU, CI staff, Headquarters for Confucius Institutes, partners in China, and AAMU administrations. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinates activities of support staff, faculty, and/or volunteers engaged in implementation and administration of program objectives.
  • Provides support in the development, implementation, and marketing of program/project function.
  • Serves as a principal liaison between students, faculty, staff, other departments, and/or external constituencies on day-to-day programmatic, operational, and administrative issues; facilities seminars, meetings, special projects, and problem resolution.
  • Writes, edits, and coordinates development of promotional materials, educational materials, training manuals, newsletters, and/or brochures, as appropriate to the program.
  • Collects and analyzes data; prepares scheduled and special reports; maintains program/project records and statistical information.
  • Performs or delegates clerical and administrative support tasks, including creation, typing, and editing of program correspondence, purchasing documents, reports, program handbooks, and other publications.
  • Assists with grant and/or proposal writing as appropriate to the objectives and funding nature of the program; may participate in other fundraising activities.
  • May perform specialized activities of a programmatic nature in direct support of the accomplishment of program objectives and protocol.
  • Coordinate exchange travel programs, may travel with students, faculty, administrations, etc.
  • Assist in develop budgets and accounts.
  • Creates various documents, reports, presentations and advertisements.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


Requirements: 
Minimum Position Requirements (including years of experience, certifications, licenses, etc.): 

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Some experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities.
  • Must be able to travel to various locations within the United States.
  • Must be able to travel to China or other countries.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs; especially Word, PowerPoint and Publisher.
  • Must be comfortable and proficient with educational outreach and recruitment.
  • Must have public speaking experience and comfortable addressing audiences.
  • Must have fairly flexible schedule and be comfortable with unpunctual outings and preparations.
  • Must be able to work after normal business hours occasionally.
  • Experience with web design and proficiency with Chinese are pluses for the position.

  • Knowledge of budgeting and cost control procedures
  • Knowledge of communication principles, media, and marketing techniques
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Records maintenance skills
  • Advanced wiring and editorial skills.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities
  • Ability to lead and train staff and/or students
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports
  • Ability to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events
