The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

 

The primary purpose of this position is to provide substantive, administrative, and logistical support to the Director of the China Power Project. The RA/PC is responsible for taking the lead in all program components, including: managing administrative and logistical tasks; assisting with program development; contributing to the program’s research agenda; and providing budgetary support. The RA/PC serves as the first point of contact for communications outside CSIS and liaises with CSIS operational departments.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research Support Activities:

 

• Conducts research and writing on a range of issues related to China, including co-authoring with the Director analysis of bilateral US-China relations for Comparative Connections.
• Writes independently to support the program’s research agenda, including for China Power reports.
• Edits written deliverables for both substance and language clarity.
• Drafts summary reports of forums, symposia, and conferences.
• Conducts background research and writing on issues pertaining to the Director’s podcast series.
• Prepares working group prospectuses, presentations, invitations, and related materials.
• Drafts meeting agendas and event summaries.

 

Program Support Activities:

 

• Conceptualizes new project ideas in coordination with the Program Director
• Writes and substantively contributes to the grant proposal process. 
• Represents the program, as needed, at internal and external meetings.
• Travel to the region as necessary.

 

Administrative Duties:

 

• Manages the day-to-day operations of the office, including fielding program calls, maintaining program calendar and arranging travel.
• Oversees fiscal management of the program, including tracking revenue and expenses and liaising with Strategic Planning on new and existing funding sources.
• Maintains up-to-date records of program contacts in Center-wide database.
• Plans and coordinates event logistics for high-level meetings, briefings, conferences, public and private events, luncheons, and program meetings.
• Prepares and disseminates routine correspondence and interacts with program stakeholders to ensure successful outreach and information flow.
• Supervises intern staff in day-to-day activities.

Required Experience

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

 

• B.A/B.S required. M.A preferred, but not essential.
• Candidate must be well versed in international politics and security issues in the Asia-Pacific. 
• Basic proficiency in Mandarin Chinese is a plus. 
• Demonstrated ability to write research reports, concept papers, and business correspondence. 
• Must possess strong communication skills including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups, media, governmental entities, and the general public. 
• Ability to work closely and cooperatively with a range of individuals with diverse interests, backgrounds and dispositions. 
• Proficiency in managing complex budgeting activities. 
• Ability to manage competing priorities and multiple projects under tight deadlines.
