The United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia seeks to fill the two positions of Program Officer for Northeast Asia (including greater China, Japan and Korea) and for South Asia.  Each Program Officer oversees thematic grants programs supporting innovation in higher education in Asia.  S/he collaborates with other UB staff members to manage grants programs with colleges and universities in the region and build academic networks across Asia.  These positions are based in the United Board’s Hong Kong office and report to the Vice President for Programs.

Functions and Duties:

The Program Officer will:

·   Oversee assigned programs and work with institutions and individual grantees to implement United Board-funded programs in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

·   Explore potential projects with grantees that advance the United Board’s mission and priorities and that meet challenges and opportunities of higher education in the region.

·   Evaluate and recommend funding for proposed projects, interview and recommend faculty for scholarships, evaluate current projects, prepare reports, and approve grant payments.

·   Work with UB’s development team to identify funding opportunities, cultivate potential donors and assist in writing funding proposals and reports.

·   Maintain ongoing contact with administrators and project coordinators in United Board-related institutions in the region through regular trips and correspondence.

·   Maintain expertise in the current issues and problems related to higher education in the region.

·   Support the general work of the United Board as required.

 

 

Qualifications and Experience:

A Ph.D. degree or the equivalent is preferred but not required.  Familiarity with higher education in Asia; strong English language skills both verbal and written; proficiency in Chinese or an Indian language (as applicable); experience in grants management and proposal writing; experience “on the ground” in China or India with higher education; ability to think strategically and independently while, at the same time, working with a team of colleagues; willingness to travel extensively; knowledge of U.S. laws and norms governing international grant-making. Candidates who are not US citizens must be eligible for a visa to the United States.

 

Characteristics: The Program Officer must demonstrate the highest moral and ethical standards and a firm commitment to advancing the mission of the United Board. S/he must be intellectually versatile; possessing (or capable of acquiring) a familiarity with diverse fields relevant to the United Board’s work, including whole person education, interreligious understanding and peace education, service learning, and leadership development. S/he must be able to move comfortably and respectfully across cultures, work effectively in a consultative manner both within the UB organization and with diverse program and institutional collaborators, and help others to form effective partnerships. S/he must possess the intellect, creativity, and imagination to discern new opportunities for the UB and develop effective strategies to build on them. Finally, s/he must be willing and able to reside in Hong Kong and travel extensively throughout the Asian region and periodically to the United States.
