Research Analyst – China/East Asia Focus | The Institute for Defense Analyses
The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers supporting federal decision making – two serving the Department of Defense (DoD) and one serving the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President of the United States. IDA assists the United States Government in addressing important national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise.
This position is in IDA’s Intelligence Analyses Division (IAD). IAD supports the DoD, the Intelligence Community, and other U.S. Government Agencies by providing analyses of critical intelligence and national security issues. IAD is involved in analytical activities across a wide range of cross disciplinary national security and intelligence matters including: programmatic assessments; technical evaluations; social science research; strategic analysis; physical, cyber, and human threat evaluations; and open source exploitation. Short and long term sponsoring arrangements with U.S. Government entities provide a steady stream of intellectual challenges for the IAD staff in the furtherance of national objectives and for identifying opportunities to improve public sector performance.

Job Description
Responsibilities
IDA seeks candidates for a Research Analyst position within IAD. This position will work alongside highly experienced analysts who are working on projects for the DoD and the Intelligence Community. Primary work will be accomplished in Alexandria, VA at the IDA headquarters in a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility.
A Research Analyst must be capable of operating unsupervised on assignments for which they are qualified. The analyst is expected to make immediate, substantive contributions to the development and completion of written and oral deliverables for sponsoring organizations.
Qualifications
- Candidates must have a Master’s degree or PhD with a focus on Chinese/East Asia military history, military doctrine or national security policies in the post-World War II era;
- Candidates must have demonstrated reading, writing and speaking skills in the Chinese (Mandarin) language, preferably gained through successful assignment (e.g. DoD Foreign Area Officer/Military Attache, US State Department or other USG agency official, etc.) in the People’s Republic of China or other Chinese (Mandarin)-speaking country;
- Candidates must possess strong analytical skills in developing and implementing analytical methodologies and then fusing developed all-source of information into clear and concise conclusions and recommendations. Such skills are to have been developed by successful, progressively more challenging assignments in the national security, military planning or military intelligence communities, including the leadership level;
- Candidates must be familiar with the DoD effects-based military planning processes;
- Outstanding analytical competencies demonstrated across multiple topics and venues;
- Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as good interpersonal skills;
- Ability to contribute effectively to a team approach to problem definition and resolution;
- Capacity for independent thought and sound judgment;
- Thorough familiarity with the national security establishment and the Intelligence Community;
