The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.
JOB SUMMARY: CSIS seeks a research intern to support the Simon Chair in Political Economy. The Simon Chair focuses on the theory and practice of economic statecraft, from trade agreements and investment treaties to financial sanctions and export controls, and the intersection between economics, geography, and foreign policy. The geographic focus of our work is the Asia-Pacific region, with specific emphasis on U.S. economic strategy toward the region, relations with China and Japan, Eurasia’s connectivity infrastructure and economic geography, and the institutions of global economic governance. Because of the fast-paced work environment, interns should be motivated self-starters that enjoy a wide variety of analytic and logistical tasks and have strong written and oral communications skills. Interns will be part of a tight-knit and dedicated team where they will have the opportunity to make serious and substantive contributions to the work of the program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct research across a broad topical and geographic scope
- Daily monitoring of foreign and economic policy developments in Asia and the activities of relevant economic institutions and forums
- Support ongoing projects on U.S. economic statecraft, U.S.-China relations, U.S.-Japan relations, U.S. economic strategy toward Asia, connectivity infrastructure, and the intersection between technology policy and economic statecraft
- Identify, attend, and take notes on internal and external events relevant to the work of the Simon Chair
- Assist in event planning and staffing

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Candidates must have strong English-language writing and research skills, be effective critical thinkers, and be detail-oriented under pressure
- Must be able to function well as part of a team
- Practical and/or academic background in at least one of the following areas is desirable:
o Political economy o Economics and economic policy o Geography (and GIS systems) o International relations o International trade and/or finance o Technology policy o Computer programming or database management o History (especially East Asian)
- Proficiency in any of the following languages is considered an asset, but not required: Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean
